Pair of Silver Mounted American Stocked Revolutionary War Pistols
Very fine pair of silver mounted pistols using Ketland & Company flintlock, London ca1775. The 8 in., .71 caliber octagonal barrels are engraved with a leafy band at the breech, “spider” inlet, silver blade front sights, London proof marks, and engraved “London” on the top flats. Locks are engraved “Ketland/& Co.” The American black walnut stocks with flat sided grips. Silver hardware including trigger guard with acorn finial and flower engraved on the bow, rosette side nail escutcheons, and sheet rammer and entry pipes; wood rammers. These pistols are 100% original and are mechanically fine. Descend through the Family of Captain Thomas Bell, Virginia’s Augusta County Militia.
Important note:
Flintlock pistols with flat grips, the absence of a grip cap, and a sideplate are features collectors often incorrectly reference as being of the 1790 – 1812 style. To overcome this misguided analogy, I included a photograph (pictured in black and white) of a ca 1770s style Twigg pistol with flat grips, no sideplate, and no grip cap that is silver mounted with an English 1771 hallmark.
