Revolutionary War Plug Bayonet

Very fine Revolutionary War Plug Bayonet. The blade is of European origin (possibly German or Spanish) that would have been imported through the West Indies to the colonies. These types of  blades were often fitted in the colonies with tapered wood grips. The use of sterling silver to make the quellen and the pommel, without hallmarks,  suggest that he bladed was made in the colonies during the Revolutionary War.

Plug Bayonets were popular with militiamen using longrifles and smooth-bore fusils that were not fitted for socket bayonets.

Excellent condition with very minor pitting on the blade. This plug bayonet has its original patina.  Measures 17 1/2″ overall and has a 11″ double edge blade
