Revolutionary War Hunting Pouch – Powder Horn from Louisa County, Virginia
18th Century Hunting Pouch and Powder Horn purchased from Janet Marie Snelson Humphries, Lousia, Virginia by Gordon Barlow. According to Janet Humphries this Hunting Pouch and Powder Horn was owned by her great—-great grandfather, Nathaniel Snelson of Louisa County, Virginia that fought in the Revolutionary War.
The hunting pouch appears to made of bear hide with nice tooling on the flap. The carrying strap appears to be cow hide and is not original to the hunting pouch. The pouch is single compartment normal found on early hunting pouches. It has a wonderful original patina and measures 7 1/2″ across and 6 1/2″ tall.
The powder horn, with the initials ‘NS’ (Nathaniel Snelson) engraved near the plug end, has a wonderful lob which is integral to the body of the powder horn and found on 18th century powder horns dating to the F&I War / Revolutionary War era. It has beautiful original patina and measures 16″ around the curve and 2 3/4″ across the butt.
