Revolutionary War Sword
American forged iron hilt sword with original scabbard carried by Lieutenant John McCutchen who served in the Revolutionary War from Augusta Co., Virginia. In spring, 1781 he was called to protect the capital of, Richmond, from the British. He was Lieutenant in Captain Buchanan’s company, Samuel Vance was Colonel of the Regiment. The regiment freed the City of Richmond and continued to New Kent County in Virginia where they met and defeated a party of British Light-horse. He was responsible for caring for the wounded from the skirmish. He and his brother Samuel were sent the next morning by Colonel Vance to General Lafayette to know what to do with our wounded and received instructions to take them to a surgeon at the Adams’ White houses in New Kent County. He stayed there 36 days while acting as commissary of the hospital where there were upwards of one hundred sick & wounded. With some of the wounded militia who had recovered they served at the Siege of Yorktown until the end of the war on 19th of October, 1781.
